7 traits employers look for in cybersecurity candidates

Perhaps you’ve read the books, taken all the classes, received the degree and have taken the time to network. There is nowhere near a shortage of cyber and info security positions available, so this is where the job hunt begins. However, what traits are cybersecurity employers looking for from cybersecurity candidates?

The truth is, tech capabilities can be taught. There are, however, a number of qualities that hiring InfoSec professionals are looking for; here are some of the top traits and needs:

Creative problem-solvers

Being an innovative problem solver is always a quality employers will value. In cybersecurity specifically, there will be problems to navigate through daily. From securing vulnerabilities or fighting an attack, the ability to analyze a problem and initiate a solution is crucial. Formulating unique solutions to demanding problems is a skill that will carry you far in any career. If creative problem-solving doesn’t come naturally to you, there are many resources to boost your problem-solving skills, making it one of your strengths.

Effective communicators

It’s important to be able to collaborate well with others. Working closely with your colleagues is a must in the security professional domain. Additionally, communication skills require not only oral but written communication skills as well as excellent listening skills.

Certifications

Correct certifications are an important factor in acquiring a position in cybersecurity. It’s important to note that these certifications, while important, will not land you a job on their own. They will, however, set you far apart from those that haven’t received these certifications.

Ethical standards

Employers will be on the lookout for potential employees who are reliable and trustworthy. Working in cybersecurity means working with sensitive information with the same skills of a black hat hacker would, only instead it is in a lawful manner and with a different end goal.

Hacker mindset

The ability to think like a hacker can quickly put you ahead of the rest when an employer is filling a cybersecurity position. Thinking like a hacker will benefit your advancements towards catching actual hackers and beating them at their own game. Employers will value this attribute, because understanding the mindset of a hacker will ultimately aid in improving cybersecurity.

Life-long learner

As the industry grows and cybersecurity advances, there will be an abundance of opportunities to re-learn and re-educate as changes take place in the industry. Hiring managers look for candidates with passion and an eagerness to enhance their skills. As cybercrime matures, a driven team of employee’s ready to ask new questions in order to defeat cybercriminals is a team employers will strive for.

Relevant experience

The more experience you have with cyber security and problem-solving, the better. Experience in the world of cybersecurity is invaluable, as it is an industry that is ever-changing. Taking advantage of cyber security internships while in school or after graduating will get you started on the right track.

From hard skills to soft skills, these traits are valuable abilities that employers will look for. You may have all of the cybersecurity courses under your belt, but without skills like quality communication, creative problem-solving and reliability, your chances at obtaining a job in this industry become few and far between. If you’re eager to brush up on your skills to stand out and be the best cybersecurity professional you can be, our Secure360 conferences is the resource for you.
