What it takes to be a CSO

As cybercriminal threats increase in complexity and reach, today’s CSO is faced with the difficult situation of fighting off these current advanced threats while at the same time building a workforce for the future that can leapfrog our companies ahead of these threats. This panel discussion will elicit our CSOs’ visions of how to build stronger, more advanced teams to fight these threats proactively, and to position the professionals on their teams to be the next thought leaders, the next CSOs.

Bill Aerts

Bill Aerts is the ISO and Director of Information Risk Management at Medtronic.  Medtronic is the world’s largest medical company.  In this role, Bill oversees Information Security, Disaster Recovery, and Forensic Services and is expanding the medical device security program across Medtronic.  He has created and championed information security programs in the insurance, transportation, retail and now healthcare industries.  Bill received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin, and holds CISSP and CISM certifications.

Renee Lopez-Pineda

Renee Lopez-Pineda is an Information Security General Manager at Delta Air Lines.   Her 28-year airline career began in Information Technology as a programmer for Northwest Airlines, where she subsequently held various roles of increasing responsibility, leading teams in application development, data services, application design specialists and wintel servers.  Renee joined Northwest’s senior leadership team in 2006. With the Delta and Northwest merger, she now has both Minneapolis and Atlanta-based team members focusing on policy, compliance, identity & access management, security incident response, forensics & investigations, and disaster recovery.  Renee is a graduate of Minnesota State University, Mankato and enjoys the outdoor activities in the Twin Cities.

Kathy Orner

Kathy joined Carlson in 2006 as vice president and chief information security officer, and was chartered to create an information security organization. She is responsible for the global information security strategies and programs for Carlson’s hotels, restaurants and travel businesses. She chairs the Information Security Council and is in charge of creating and maintaining the global policies and environment that safeguard the assets, confidential information and intellectual property of Carlson. Before joining Carlson, Kathy held positions at United Health Group, most notably as its first chief information security officer.  Kathy also spent many years with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota in various IT leadership roles including chief information security officer, and Deluxe Corporation.  She serves on the board of Qualys CSO Advisory Board, Executive Committee Secretary and Board member of Women’s Health Leadership Trust, and formerly was on the board and executive committee of Dakota Communities Inc.

Dave Notch

Dave has 22 years of experience in the technology and security industries and is currently President of Intensity Analytics, a software firm that specializes in developing innovative and industry leading solutions related to security analytics, biometric authentication and productivity enhancement.  Previously, he was CISO at Thomson Reuters and has also held other senior-level roles in security and technology architecture, engineering and operations.  Dave holds a Masters degree in Computer and Information Science from the University of Minnesota, Institute of Technology.

Steve Brown

Steve Brown is the former Head of Information Security Threat Management and Enterprise Information Security Operations at Wells Fargo.  His career in information security spans more than 25 years and includes management positions as head of Information Security Risk Assessment Services, Security Architecture Consulting, Head of Network Engineering, and Vulnerability and Penetration Testing Services.  Steve is a retired Navy Chief Warrant Officer, with 20 years of experience in Information Warfare and Network Operations.  He is a co-chair of the Minnesota CSO Summit and on the Board of Directors of the Financial Services, Information Sharing Analysis Center (FS-ISAC).   Steve is based in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
