K-12 Education focuses on teaching the youth of our country, that is their business. Teachers and leaders in schools need to focus on student learning yet are experiencing the impact that unsecured technology and information can have. Saint Paul Public School district has made security and privacy a priority and took the first step by hiring a Data Security Manager to build a Information Security and Privacy Program. In this talk, we will discuss how we are applying risk management to the school and quantify risk by the impact to learning. We’ll also discuss the techniques used to start building a security program from the board level down to the grass roots of the school. Finally, we’ll end with lessons learned and successes of changing a culture to be mindful of security while keeping the focus on learning.
